Position: Communications Coordinator
Reports to: Communications Director, Long Beach Forward

Long Beach Forward focuses on strengthening the power of organizations and community members by providing them with the tools and training necessary to be heard, be influential, and drive real change in Long Beach. We are motivated by the belief that everyone in Long Beach should be able to influence the decisions that impact their lives and the knowledge that oftentimes low-income communities of color are left out of decision making.
Long Beach Forward provides leadership, strategy, communications, and convening support to multiple campaigns in order to advance the vision that Long Beach will be a place where race and income do not determine one’s future—it’s a community where everyone is safe, connected, and healthy. Long Beach Forward (previously known as the support organization for Building Healthy Communities: Long Beach) was established in 2010 to coordinate the collaborative efforts of The California Endowment’s Building Healthy Communities initiative in Long Beach. Long Beach Forward now partners with over 50 community-based organizations and facilitates or participates in multiple collaborative groups and campaigns, including the role of Local Support Network for the Best Start Central Long Beach initiative.
A core component of Long Beach Forward’s work in movement strategy is based on strategic communications and narrative change organizing. The Communications Coordinator is a key individual that will help co-develop and implement organizational communication strategies while managing and providing communications support for the multiple initiatives, campaigns, and collaboratives supported by Long Beach Forward. This is a unique role that combines communications with community organizing to help organizations challenge dominant narratives, help people share their personal stories, and work collaboratively within several teams.
Co-develop and implement narrative change strategies for collaboratives, campaigns, and coalitions led by or supported by Long Beach Forward.
Co-lead and implement digital strategies and content for Long Beach Forward's direct and affiliated social media channels, including staying up to date on relevant trends and developments related to digital storytelling.
Monitor audience engagement by measuring and tracking digital analytics.
Participate in and support the development and healthy functioning of relevant organizational teams and collaborative groups, including providing communications expertise and facilitation support.
Develop written and visual content that includes but may not be limited to: online email blasts, blog posts, press releases, graphics, videos, animations, and other collateral materials or content.
Organize monthly online newsletters: pitch ideas, draft and edit content collaboratively, and format for delivery.
Maintain the organization’s websites with updated content and materials.
Work with individual community partners and organization-supported campaigns to implement communication plans and tactics in a time-sensitive manner.
Attend community events and meetings to help document and provide communications support (such as photography, videography, and social media promotion).
Directly translate or assist with translating organizational communications materials and items for other initiatives supported by Long Beach Forward.
Co-develop and participate in Long Beach Forward’s culture of philanthropy practices as it relates to communications strategies.
Supervise and support relevant interns and volunteers as available and delegate communications tasks and tactics in an efficient manner.
Other duties as assigned, including supporting other staff and representing the organization upon assignment.
Ability to communicate effectively in English with diverse audiences, both in writing and verbally.
Bilingual in Spanish is a plus, but not required.
Experience using social media platforms (including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and LinkedIn).
Strong work ethic and commitment to health equity, social change, and community organizing.
Success in prioritizing and meeting multiple demands and deadlines.
Strong organizational skills, including the ability to work collaboratively, manage own work and time, and be accountable for performance.
Alignment and agreement with the vision, mission, and values of Long Beach Forward.
Reliable access to transportation (car not required).
Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
