Long Beach Forward’s Associate Director is the connector of multiple initiatives, campaigns, and collaborative efforts and drives our organizational strategy to build community knowledge, leadership, and power with a focus to improve the quality of life for children and families in Long Beach.
Long Beach Forward provides leadership, strategy, communications, and convening support to multiple campaigns in order to advance the vision that Long Beach will be a place where race and income do not determine one’s future—it’s a community where everyone is safe, connected, and healthy.

Position: Associate Director
Reports to: Executive Director
Classification: Exempt; Permanent
Hours: Regular Full-Time
Compensation: Annual salary between $72,000 and $75,000
Benefits: Benefits include paid vacation and sick time; paid organization-wide wellness days (every last Friday of the month); full health, dental, and vision insurance coverage and partial coverage for dependents; and life insurance and 403(b) retirement account.

Long Beach Forward was established in 2010 to coordinate the collaborative efforts of The California Endowment’s Building Healthy Communities initiative in Long Beach. Long Beach Forward now partners with over 50 community-based organizations and facilitates or participates in multiple collaborative groups and campaigns, including the support role for First 5 LA’s Best Start Central Long Beach network.
Long Beach Forward is a highly collaborative workplace guided by our co-developed organizational principles and culture of philanthropy principles. Long Beach Forward is a hybrid work environment with remote and in-person working options. Occasional work and meetings in-person will be required. Per the health and safety protocols, all employees must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 within 60 days of employment with the organization. Long Beach Forward requires all employees to complete COVID-19 testing on a biweekly basis regardless of work location.
About the role:
Long Beach Forward’s Associate Director is the connector of multiple initiatives, campaigns, and collaborative efforts and drives our organizational strategy to build community knowledge, leadership, and power with a focus to improve the quality of life for children and families in Long Beach. Core to this position is a strong background in organizing skills and strategy and the ability to support the development of staff and high-functioning teams. As a member of the organizational leadership team, the Associate Director will play a key role in organizational culture and strategy. The Associate Director serves as a key representative to Long Beach Forward’s work and embodies our community-identified priorities and organizational positions and practices in building relationships with community members, partner organizations, decision makers, donors, and funders.
Direct and guide the organization’s programmatic initiatives and campaigns in coordination with key leadership, management, and organizing staff including:
Leading political education, issue identification, and campaign strategy for Long Beach Forward’s parent and caregiver organizing (inclusive of the Best Start Central Long Beach network);
Coordinating and facilitating communication and collaboration between partners, community members, and organizational staff;
Supervising and coaching staff and interns;
Cultivating and maintaining relationships with relevant partners and community members; and
Contributing to narrative strategy development and implementation of communication tactics.
Contribute collaboratively to strategic planning and implementation of plans for the organization, including organizational development, culture setting/building, and management.
Participate in and support the development and healthy functioning of multiple administrative and programmatic teams, including serving as a member of the organization’s Leadership Team.
Collaborate with the Executive Director and Communications Director in cultivating media relationships and partnerships to advance organizational and campaign based communication strategies.
Train staff, organizational partners, and community members in core organizing and facilitation skills.
Maintain knowledge of relevant government policies, practices, and strategic points of leverage.
Represent Long Beach Forward’s community-identified priorities and our organizational positions to funders and donors; partner organizations; elected officials, systems leaders, and their staff in coordination with the Executive Director.
Participate in organizational and initiative based learning and evaluation activities, including internal tracking of goals and grant reporting.
Participate in Long Beach Forward’s culture of philanthropy and community-centric fundraising work.
Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Significant experience in programmatic and/or organizational management and development.
Experience managing and leading high-functioning teams, including training and directly supervising community or union organizers.
A track record of leading successful community or union organizing campaigns.
Strong community or union organizing skills including one-on-one organizing, coalition building, group facilitation, and training others in these skills.
Ability to build new relationships and work with diverse groups, especially in communities represented in Central, West, and North Long Beach.
Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, both in writing and verbally, relaying complicated information in a straightforward, culturally and linguistically appropriate manner.
Success with fundraising, grant writing, and/or building relationships with funders and donors.
Bilingual in Spanish is a plus, but not required.
Success in prioritizing and meeting multiple demands and deadlines.
Strong organizational skills, including the ability to work independently, manage own work and time, and be accountable for performance.
Passion for community organizing and social-justice issues.
Familiarity with Long Beach’s political, social, and economic landscape (especially as it relates to city government and school board) and issues relevant to the Central, West, and North Long Beach.
Technologically proficient, especially with google suite, social media, and microsoft office.
Reliable access to transportation (car not required).
Ability and flexibility to work in the evenings, on the weekends, and in-person as directed or needed.
