Meet the Long Beach Forward team
Nereyda Soto (She/Her) has been driven by the desire of giving back to her mom and her community. She worked her way through college as a server and a barista at a hotel in Long Beach. While working at the hotel, she became a leader and shop steward fighting for dignity and respect in her workplace. She became involved in her community by canvassing for local leaders that strengthened her vision of an inclusive Long Beach that focuses on undeserved communities.
Nereyda was on the forefront for WW, a 4-yearlong campaign for real protections against sexual harassment in Long Beach hotels. In 2017, she was honored with “Times Magazine Person of the year – Silence breakers” for speaking out against sexual harassment in the workplace. Her experience as a worker catapulted her passion to organize workers and her community. Nereyda Organized with Unite here local 11 as an internal and external organizer. In her seven years in labor organizing, she has led several successful campaigns including the 2019 Hyatt Andaz work strike. Nereyda is first generation born, she was born and raised in Long Beach, California. In her free time, she loves cooking, gardening, and concerts
