Children and Families
Best Start Central Long Beach
An initiative of First 5 LA, Best Start Central Long Beach is working to create the best possible community for young children and their families. Best Start brings together parents, community organizations, institutions, and others to improve policies and resources to better support parents and create a community where children and families can thrive. Best Start also provides the skills-building and leadership training to help the group achieve its goals and ensure that children are safe, healthy, and ready to learn.
Participatory Budgeting is a process for the community, by the community.
Participatory Budgeting is a democratic process in which community members directly decide how to spend resources within a budget. It’s a way to empower people within a community to get involved in budget decisions that will impact their lives. Starting in 2019, Best Start Central Long Beach began engaging in a Participatory Budgeting process to decide how to spend $450,000 on community identified projects. Learn more about the Participatory Budgeting at www.participatorybudgeting.org/what-is-pb/ and follow Best Start Central Long Beach on Facebook for more updates.
The results are now in!
After months of community members and organizations coming together to create ideas and proposals about how to improve Central Long Beach for children and their families, the results of the Participatory Budgeting process are finally here! With over a hundred ballots cast by community members, the Participatory Budgeting process has put the power and decision-making into the hands of the Central Long Beach community to decide how to spend 450,000 on community priorities related to our Community Change Agenda. We are proud to announce the nine winning projects:
Congratulations to all the community members, budget delegates, and partnership members who worked hard in the Participatory Budgeting process! For more information, contact Andrew Mandujano at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Members of the community are invited to join the monthly Partnership Meeting to find a space to contribute to this movement. Food, translation in Spanish and Khmer, childcare, and transportation assistance are available.
Members of the Partnership have shared that their participation is always “meaningful” and a “reminder that it is possible to change our community.” It’s also a space to make connections to others with similar experiences and learn about resources in the community,
Due to COVID-19, monthly community partnership meetings are postponed for the forseeable future. We will update this page as soon as it is deemed safe to convene as a group.
