Adriana (she/her/hers) serves as the Census Program Coordinator with Long Beach Forward, where she works with community partners at the local and regional levels to ensure that Long Beach has a complete count in the upcoming 2020 Census. Born and raised in East Oakland, Adriana identifies as a first-generation Chicana who loves to write, look at maps, and take photographs. Her passion for spatial justice intensified when she and her mother were displaced from their apartment in the Disneyland Resort area due to unjust rent increases tied to gentrification; at the same time, she found power in community while working at various cultural spaces in Orange County. As a former community organizer with Long Beach Residents Empowered, a local housing justice organization, she supported low-income tenants in the city by educating them on their rights to organize as well as the impacts of local policies. She strategized a successful campaign with LiBRE members to push back on unjust rent increases. Adriana recently received a post-baccalaureate certificate in Urban Planning from California State University, Long Beach and holds a bachelor’s degree in Ethnic Studies from California State University, Fullerton.
